APRIL 21, 2005 – New Tripoli, PA. - Northwestern Ambulance Corps, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization established in 1970 will be upgrading their ambulance services to include state-of-the-art Advanced Life Support services, also known as ‘A-L-S’. Advanced Life Support on an ambulance is like having a small emergency room on wheels that will quickly respond to your side if you are sick or injured. The Northwestern Ambulance Corps ALS mobile emergency room carries life-saving drugs, special heart and breathing equipment and will be staffed full-time with paramedics and EMT's. These specially trained career staff and volunteers will now provide you with the highest level of emergency care in the fastest time possible. Over the past 35 years, Northwestern Ambulance Corps has had only basic life support capabilities, relying on distant mutual aid for patients that needed ALS expertise.

“This is the single most important step that Northwestern Ambulance Corps has taken since we started the service in 1970”, said Earl Ohl, volunteer Chief of the Corps.

With ALS capabilities, Northwestern’s ambulances will be able to provide state-of-the-art emergency medical care. The ambulances will carry specialized drugs and cardiac monitoring equipment to help those who are having heart attacks. The Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) working with the Paramedics will have new training and medicines to help those with trouble breathing, diabetic emergencies and emphysema, to name a few. Most importantly, Northwestern Ambulance Corps new potentially life-saving ALS service will often get to the very sick or injured must faster than ever before.

Providing the needed ALS will be expensive, especially in the beginning when Northwestern makes its initial purchases of the specialized medical equipment.

“We will need some generous financial help from our friends and neighbors to bring this essential and critically needed service to our community.” said David K. Van Allen, a director and financial advisor to the Corps. “Our immediate goal is to raise $100,000 to help purchase the specialized equipment, drugs and medical tools needed.”

These purchase costs are a one time expense; insurance billing along with Northwestern’s subscription plan will be used to pay for the expenses of the career staff of paramedics and EMT's. No increase in rates or subscription plans are planned and volunteers will continue to be a vital part of the new ALS operation.

Recently, Northwestern Ambulance Corps was asked to present their ALS business and financial plan to the Board of Directors at the New Tripoli Bank. New Tripoli Bank has always taken a vested interest in the public services needs of the area and Northwestern Ambulance is a longtime customer of the community bank. Good news came shortly thereafter as New Tripoli Bank president and CEO David R. Hunsicker informed Van Allen and Northwestern Ambulance Corps president Larry Hartman that he and the bank’s board of directors had approved a major donation of $50,000.00. This donation would be earmarked to help offset the initial purchase costs and to help speed up Northwestern Ambulance’s start date to provide these vital ALS services to the area.

“It is extraordinary to see a commercial business willing to provide this type of community support”, said Van Allen referring to both the amount of the donation and the enthusiasm of the bank’s leadership in the project. “Dave and the team at New Tripoli Bank sees the long-term community importance of our new ALS service and decisively took the leading role in setting the pace for our success”

Larry Hartman, Corps president commented, “This bank is truly a friend of the community. This is not a donation to Northwestern Ambulance Corps; it is a donation to every person living in the neighborhoods we serve.”

The sizable initial donation from the New Tripoli Bank greatly helps Northwestern Ambulance Corps’ effort in fundraising for the ALS services, but even more financial help is needed. Emergency services in the area are not directly funded by specific tax dollars. The generosity of the public, the townships proper, our past Auxiliary and businesses like the New Tripoli Bank is what has always kept our area safe and well served. Your generous donations to the ALS project are normally tax deductible and can be made to: Northwestern Ambulance Corps – ALS Fund. 7046 Route 309, New Tripoli, PA 18066, any amount no matter how small is greatly appreciated and needed.
